Deltec Homes has signed an agreement to market and manufacture an energy-efficient home designed by students and professors at Appalachian State University, the Asheville, N.C.-based homebuilder announced.

The Solar Homestead, which utilizes an energy efficient building envelope and incorporates renewable resources and innovative technology into an “adaptable, self-sufficient, affordable and attractive” prototype, won the People’s Choice Award at the 2011 Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. Deltec contributed to the project by providing the student-led team with hands-on experience constructing the wall panels and roof systems and assisting with the engineering aspects of the design.

“The collaboration between ASU and Deltec Homes has been truly inspiring,” Deltec President Steve Linton said in a statement. “We have all pushed our limits, gained knowledge and developed a relationship that provides in-depth experience for the students and a design that has a profound impact on the future of homebuilding—a home that produces as much energy as it consumes.”

Through the agreement, Deltec will pay royalties to Appalachian that support the Department of Technology and Environmental Design’s next large-scale, sustainable design-build project, as well as other research and creative activities at the university.

“This is a great example of our department working with local industry to bring sustainable solutions to the people of North Carolina and beyond,” said Jamie Russell, assistant professor in the Department of Technology and Environmental Design at the university. “It is a great step forward, bringing energy efficient housing to a large consumer base.”

The project is high among Deltec homebuilders who want to dramatically reduce their environmental impact while living in a cutting-edge home.
