Not only are 5,000-square foot homes the largest category in the Gold Nugget awards, but these houses will be some of the largest that buyers have ever purchased. Precisely built and expertly planned, the homes play off of their surrounding landscapes and use their space wisely.
Luxury is the recurring theme in all six homes.
The NorthSky 5040 in Lone Tree, Colo., has a master suite with a private covered balcony, fireplace, oversized walk-in closet, and spa bath, along with an open-rail stair and an infinity kitchen. The Andalusia at Coral Mountain — Plan Santa Rosa in La Quinta, Calif., has vanishing glass walls in its great room and master bedroom to provide views of the local lakes and mountains. It also combines Spanish architecture with Mid-Century and Danish Modern furnishings.
The Oliva Plan 3 in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., also emphasizes an indoor-outdoor theme with multi-folding patio doors that connect the interior with a Loggia and rear yard. The Trevi at Orchard Hills Plan 1 in Irvine, Calif., contains a music room along with a California room and courtyard, which are two attached outdoor rooms. Its second floor has a covered deck with an outdoor staircase leading up to it. San Diego's The Estates 1X by Standard Pacific Homes has six bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms, along with an alfresco room with lounging niches, linear design fireplaces, and built-in heat lamps. If that wasn't enough, it has a personal vineyard and zen garden, too.
Those homes, all merit winners, are not quite on the level as grand winner The Estates at Del Sur Plan 2 in San Diego. The house fits in everything into a one story plan. The master suite juts off the back of the house, giving it a sense of seclusion and providing it with clear views of the Southern California topography. Its great room and nook are next to an outdoor California room and spacious backyard.
