National color expert Kate Smith, president of Sensational Color, predicts that 2014 will be the year of “quiet elegance” for roofing colors across America. Tones of deep gray, smoky plum and muted teal evoke a sense of silence and contentment, Smith says.
“I always recommend starting [at the roof] and working your way down with cohesive colors,” she says. “A popular grayish purple mixed in with both light and dark purple slate tiles pairs beautifully with gold, bronze or deep plum on the rest of the home’s key exterior features.”
For homeowners who prefer a more reserved color combination, Smith recommends neutral exterior tones: “Try colors with depth such as mid-tone sage green and deep, rich brown.”
