Indices Finish Quarter in the Black

Despite rising oil prices and a drop in consumer spending and income, indices closed in positive terrain for the month ending March 31, 2006. The Builders' Index added 12.32 points, or 0.98 percent, to end March at 1264.97.

Despite rising oil prices and a drop in consumer spending and income, indices closed in positive terrain for the month ending March 31, 2006. The Builders' Index added 12.32 points, or 0.98 percent, to end March at 1264.97. On the Product Manufacturers' side, the index ended at 969.60, an increase of 30.49 points, or 3.25 percent.

USG romped ahead 10.48 points, or 12.41 percent, to end the month at 94.96. USG shareholders on a certain date (which has not yet been determined) will have a right to purchase one new common share for each share owned for a price of $40.

Whirlpool completed its marriage to Maytag on the last day of our trading session, and sent Maytag stock ahead 4.13 points, or 24.01 percent. Including the assumption of Maytag debt, the deal is worth about $2.6 billion. Maytag closed at 21.33, and was our top percentage gainer. Whirlpool added 1.68 points, or 1.87 percent and ended at 91.47.

William Lyon Homes jumped a healthy 10.58 points after CEO William Lyon offered $93 per share for all shares outstanding in the company. WLS closed at 95.68, and was the Builders' top dollar gainer in March.
