Manufacturers Up, Builders Down

A Halloween rally wasn't enough to bring the major indices into positive terrain for the session ending October 31, 2005. Consumer spending rose 0.5 percent after a drop in the previous month. A Halloween rally wasn't enough to bring the major indices into positive terrain for the session ending October 31, 2005. Consumer spending rose 0.5 percent after a drop in the previous month. The Commerce Department also reported a 3.8 percent gain in the gross domestic product for the July through September quarter, growing more than expected in the wake of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Acquisitions also fueled the rally.

The Fed was expected to hike interest rates when they meet shortly after the close of our trading session, but analysts noted that a shift in their policies could influence the tone of the markets. "A lot of people are looking for the traditional November rally," said Rick Pendergraft, an equity trader at Schaeffer's Investment Research. "The more people look for it, the more concerned I am it won't happen. Any info not expected out of the Fed . . . could quickly halt the rally."
