The Atlantic’s CityLab covers the story of Emily Berger, who helped her mother move into an assisted living facility in Brooklyn’s trend Park Slope.
As the neighborhood gentrified and attracted a younger crowd, it was abruptly announced by the home’s management in March 5, 2014, that the home will be closing, as the building will be sold to an investor for $76.5 million.
The new investor will turn it into a market-rate apartments, and residents had 90 days to move. “It is a chilling scenario: The place where you, or your parent, are supposed to live out your final years in peace is suddenly shuttered,” writes contributing reporter Carlyn Kolker in CityLab.
