Adherence to codes could be the difference between saving or losing a house in a natural disaster

Winter Park, Fla., officials used May’s designation as Building Safety Month to build support for building codes. When one home survives adjacent to one that is destroyed during a natural disaster, the reason often comes down to whether the homes were properly designed and whether builders adhered to safety and fire protection codes, said George Wiggins, the city’s building department director. Wiggins noted the value of city building inspectors, relating the story of a resident of a recently built home who noticed a sound coming from their electrical panel. A city inspector noted that the inside of the panel had burned out, a discovery that may have prevented a fire.
