Bold colors, rich finishes, and a lived-in feel are being cited by experts as some of the biggest trends driving interior design for 2018.
The Wall Street Journal's poll of 100 designers revealed a consensus on neutrals like white and grey. “Without any contrast, gray can feel tired and uninspiring,” said Johanna Uurasjarvi, creative director at West Elm. “We’re long overdue for the return of color in décor.” Interior designer Jean Liu said, “[White] can be scary, especially for families with children. From counter tops to cabinets, keeping it clean is a challenge.”
"Nature will always fascinate,” furniture and lighting designer Asher Dunn observed, “and bio-mimicry is an intuitive next step in bringing the outdoors inside in an abstract and visceral way." "An all-over organic approach to pattern feels more honest than rigid patterns that you can see stop and start,” said textile designer Michele Dopp, who took a cue from stone veining for one of her recent textile designs.
