As Atlantic hurricane season begins, this article offers eight steps for construction companies to secure work sites before a storm hits. The first step is to develop a hurricane preparation plan that can be as simple as a memo delineating who is responsible for certain tasks. Other steps include:

  • Secure job site materials including dumpsters and portable bathrooms
  • Place pumps in excavations or basements in advance of a storm
  • Secure hazardous chemicals offsite, if necessary
  • Use caution during damage assessment, especially in standing water because sharp debris may not be visible
