One Manhattan interior designer tells the Wall Street Journal that “too many chairs at a dining table can look like soldiers at attention.”

Instead, designer Sandra Nunnerlay advocates using benches or sofas in dining areas. This design strategy complements the growing trend of open floor plans and more casual settings.

Manhattan-based decorator Brad Ford tells the Journal “We’re not so rigid anymore, comfort and flexibility are taking [precedence] over formality.”
