Many people are spending large chunks of their income on their rent, which inhibits them from using their money on other things, such as saving for a house.
According to NAHB, 48 percent of renter households paid 30 percent or more of their earnings toward rent in 2015. NAHB examined rent-burdened households, sorting by age, location, marital status, and employment status.
Renters in large metro areas, especially along the coasts, were the ones most likely to be rent-burdened.
