Many of these affordable areas are located in the Midwest, and are increasingly attracting Millennials. Buyers aged 37 years and younger are 5 percent more likely this year than last to settle in a small town.
This year, Mexico, Missouri ranked second on Realtor.com's list, and was number one last year. Established in 1836, Mexico is filled with affordable older homes and historic buildings in the downtown area. Mexico's median home price is $69,600, and the unemployment rate is currently at 4.2 percent. Number one city Logansport, Indiana has a median home price of $62,700, and buyers are able to "live out in the country here and still be within 10 minutes of town," says real estate broker Princessa Rennewanz.
Sure, small towns lack the nonstop excitement and endless opportunities of urban living. But these places are a heck of a lot cheaper. And many have great schools, charming historic homes, and a great sense of community. The realtor.com data team set out to find the best small towns in America where you can find affordable and often beautiful housing, safe communities—and, just as important for former city dwellers, plenty of things to do.
