As the senior population in the U.S. continues to rise, retirees are looking for apartment living, active lifestyles, and rural locations.
“Between 2010 and 2040, we predict the nation’s 65-plus population will grow by roughly 90 percent,” says Hamilton Lombard, a demographics researcher for the University of Virginia. “In some areas of the country, most of the population growth will come from retirees.”
Curbed reports that many seniors are looking for accessible urban housing, for proximity to both city amenities and urban-dwelling family members. Others are moving rural, away from the expenses of luxury retirement communities in places like Florida and California. Across the board, seniors are looking to live active lifestyles, with social communities and walkable neighborhoods.
At the same time, there is currently an unmet need for affordable housing for some seniors: The U.S. only serves about a third of adults age 62 or older who qualify for housing and rental assistance.
