More than half of American homeowners with a child under 18 years of age when they bought their home said their kid's opinion majorly impacted their homebuying decision.

A recent Harris Poll survey by SunTrust Mortgage found that the share was 55 percent. Breaking out the data generationally, Millennial homeowner parents are even more likely to be swayed by their child's views, at almost 75 percent. But what do these kids want? The survey found that the top desire for kids is their own bedroom at 57 percent, and 34 percent of kids want a big backyard, according to The Washington Post.

If you’re used to parents of toddlers asking their kids whether they want to go to the park or the pool, to drink apple juice or water, or to play baseball or soccer, you won’t be surprised to hear that parents rely on their children’s opinions when it comes to major decisions, too ... Renters who plan to buy in the future are also likely to be swayed by their kids: 83 percent said their children’s opinion will be a factor in what home they buy. The survey found that 72 percent of renters hope to buy a house within the next two years.
