A $12.66 million federal housing grant, announced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, will help fund programs to provide stable, long-term housing made available through nonprofit homeless organizations and local governments in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties across Central Florida.
The funds will be used to help those who lost their homes during the past year amid unprecedented rent hikes and flooding from hurricanes, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
“This award means that we are going to be able to help more people at a time when we know there is great and increasing need,” said Martha Are, CEO of the Homeless Services Network of Central Florida, which applied for the federal housing grant last fall.
“And for the hundreds we’ve already housed in the past year, this money means we can maintain their housing,” she said.
