Rebuilding From the Wreckage With Nudura ICFs

Learn how Nudura ICFs bring safety and protection to a Colorado family

Rebuilding a home from the Marshall Fires with Nudura ICFs in Colorado

In December 2021 in Superior, Colo., the Morris family was forced to flee their home as the Marshall Fires ravaged their community. In the aftermath of this devastating event, the family prioritized rebuilding a strong, durable home that was disaster resilient.

Superior, Colorado before

That’s where Nudura Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) come in. ICFs create a durable building enclosure that can withstand many different forces of nature. The strength of the insulated concrete wall systems comes from the steel-reinforced solid concrete core. Nudura offers Insulated Concrete Forms in sizes ranging from 4 inches to 12 inches of concrete that stand between you and the elements. Compared to traditional wood-frame walls offering only soft bat insulation and a wood frame, the strength and safety you get with Nudura insulated concrete wall systems are far superior. As a form of passive fire protection, Nudura ICFs have a fire protection rating of up to 4 hours compared to wood-framing with only a 45-minute rating. Those precious moments could be the difference between life and death during an evacuation due to the spread of flames.

Superior, Colorado progress

Matt Morris, a civil engineering professor, was first introduced to Nudura ICFs long before the tragedy that struck his neighborhood. “My first exposure to ICFs was actually in 2006, post Hurricane Katrina. I was actually thinking of building with ICFs as a contractor. I never did it, but that was my first exposure to it, seeing how resilient it was in hurricane regions. It was in the back of my mind and when it came time to rebuild this home, I wanted my kids to sleep at night and wanted to know I was safe. The more I researched about it, the more I realized how beneficial it is with the winds we have here and the energy efficiency” Morris states.

This story shows how the latest trends in construction are helping people in difficult situations. Whether it's the threat of wildfires or other disasters, Nudura building materials are providing innovative solutions. It's important to recognize the dedication and resilience of the Morris family, and to have a discussion about the importance of having fire-resistant and disaster resilient homes—and the safety and peace of mind these materials can provide.
