The share of new homes with two-story foyers fell from 29% to 25% in 2021, the lowest level in the last 5 years, according to NAHB Eye on Housing. Two-story foyers have been on the decline in new-construction projects since 2012 as a growing number of homebuyers consider the extra space to be both impractical and energy-inefficient.
Throughout 2021, most new single-family homes were built without a vaulted entranceway that was at the level of the second-floor ceiling.
Regionally, the share declined in seven of the nine divisions. Among these divisions, the West South Central has the highest share of new homes started with two-story foyers (35%). The New England and West North Central are the only two divisions to see an increase in the share of two-story foyers from 2020 to 2021.
