Habitat for Humanity employed the help of 150 volunteers in Newark, Del., last Saturday to build 44 interior walls that will be used in four houses that are currently under construction in Wilmington. The event, which took place in a the parking lot at the Newark United Methodist Church, brought together students, pastors, families, and a number of experienced Habitat for Humanity volunteers, the Newark Post reports.
The completed homes will be donated to families in need, and the organization soon hopes to build affordable housing in Newark as well.
Bruce Yost, who helped organize Saturday’s event for Newark UMC, said the church was trying to find a way for members to be more involved in the community rather than just raising money or writing checks.
“How can this church become more relational versus transactional?” Yost said.
The church committed $25,000 for lumber and other supplies and opened the volunteer opportunity to everyone in the community. The volunteers were a mix of church members, UD students, people from other local churches and other folks from the community.
