Economic experts are predicting a recession by 2021, but a new study finds 7 cities that are "recession proof," mostly located in the South and Midwest.
Breaking out the data in Livability's study, the lowest median home price in the top 7 cities is in seventh-ranked Des Moines, Iowa, $139,000. As well, Des Moines is the fastest-growing city in the Midwest, and is becoming a hotbed for tech hires in the Silicon Prairie, CNBC reports. According to Livability reporter Emily Handy, Des Moines, the "Hartford (Connecticut) of the West," is "awash with job[s] ... in a wide array of industries, including agribusiness and financial services."
However, there are certain spots around the country where residents feel the bite of economic downturns like the Great Recession less severely. Website Livability.com compiled a list of seven cities, largely in the Midwest and South, where you might consider relocating to avoid the worst effects of any recession to come. Here's a look at each, along with median home prices from Zillow.com and the local unemployment rate, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data for December.
