When it comes to Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU), Portland, Ore., is a leading city, and a local family, the Dyers, shares their story with Zillow Blog.

The decision to build an ADU came out of necessity – they wanted a place for their parents to be able to stay over near where they live in a one-bedroom bungalow. After weighing in the pros and cons, the Dyers decided there would be more benefit to building an ADU, from spending more time with their parents to renting it out to vacationers when it is vacant.
