Realtor.com offers some suggestions for buyers who want to build their own homes from the ground up—tips that could give professional builders insight as well.

Including these add-ons early on will spare homeowners from a few migraines and costly retrofits down the road. The first are cable conduits, which Realtor.com describes as “future-proofing” a home to allow whatever innovations will come out of Silicon Valley next.

“Yes, smart home features are increasingly going wireless, but that doesn’t mean you should skip running cable conduits throughout the house,” the article says. This is especially true if homeowners want the option to build a home theater or full-home sound system in the future.

Other upgrades include radiant heating, outdoor outlets, accessibility features, central vacuums, and eco-friendliness.
