Managing a long-standing home building business can be hard enough, but managing one that is actively growing can add an extra layer of pressure. Strong leadership and communication suddenly become a top priority as leadership moves from wearing all the hats to managing and delegating tasks to a team.

To help leaders in the housing industry manage their growing teams, home remodeling and design platform Houzz spoke with experienced housing professionals to get their top tips for success. Some of their suggestions for growing businesses include: having regular team meetings to make sure everyone is on the same page; setting clear goals and making sure everyone knows their roles; tailoring roles to suit each unique member of a team; learning how to delegate tasks; and more.

Good communication is essential, whatever the size of your team, says Michael Winn, founder and CEO of Winn Design + Build in McLean, Virginia. “It aligns your team’s efforts, prevents misunderstandings and ensures everyone is working toward the same goals,” he says. “We keep it going through regular team meetings, open-door policies and using collaboration tools to track progress and share updates in real time.”

Machi Medrzycki, general contractor at MLM in New Orleans, agrees. “Hold regular meetings and use clear, concise instructions,” he says. “We hold two in-person meetings per week to hash out issues. There is something to say about in-person meetings — we get to read the room and sense the energy.”
