Americans Split on What Tax Reform Means for Housing

May 29, 2018

Democrats and Republicans differ in their perception of what the December 2017 tax reform means for homebuyers.

The most recent Housing Aspirations Report from Zillow found that 45 percent of Democrats said the new tax law has made it more difficult to buy a home, while 42 percent of Republicans said the law made it easier. Young adults aged 18-to-34 were more likely to take a stance, with only 37 percent saying the law made it neither easier nor more difficult to buy a home. That is compared to 43 percent of respondents aged 35-to-54 and 46 percent over 55 that chose the same option.

Despite skewing slightly more Democratic in their partisan affiliation, young adults were the most likely of any age group to say that the law makes it easier to buy a home. More than a quarter (28 percent) of young adults, compared 25 percent of of mid-career adults and 20 percent of older adults, said the tax law made it easier to buy a home.
