NAHB Calls on Federal Government for Housing Finance Reform
The National Association of Home Builders is urging Congress, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the Federal Housing Finance Agency to work together on ending the federal conservatorships of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and to establish a stable, bipartisan housing finance system. In a recent resolution, NAHB stated its support for a federal backstop of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac’s mortgage-backed securities while advocating for continued access to affordable, long-term fixed-rate mortgages. The resolution also emphasized the need to create better and more fair access to housing funds and mortgage financing from state and local housing financing agencies.
Further resolved that NAHB supports maintaining a multifaceted housing finance system with both competing and complementary components, including private, federal, state and regional sources of capital liquidity as the best way to achieve the goals of the Housing Act of 1949. The system should support a reasonable menu of sound mortgage products for both single-family and multifamily housing, governed by prudent underwriting standards and adequate oversight and regulation.
