U.S. Senators from opposite sides of the aisle recently introduced the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act. The legislation would strengthen national model building codes to make new homes and commercial buildings more energy-efficient.
The bill is opposed by the National Association of Home Builders, which says the model building code changes are too costly and aggressive. NAHB said it would support legislation introduced in the House of Representatives requiring codes supported by the Department of Energy to have a payback period of 10 years or less.
