McCarthy Building Companies, in Woodland, Calif., hosted its third annual "Construction 101 for Teens" workshop to encourage more young women to consider careers in the construction industry. Around 40 Sacramento-area high school girls participated in hands-on activities to learn about drywall and basic carpentry skills, gaining practical experience about the skilled trades, KCRA3 reports.
According to its organizers, the event aims to showcase the opportunities available to women in construction and to inspire girls to pursue careers in engineering, construction, and design.
"What we are hoping for today is to show high school students what it's like to be a female in construction," said Monique Hansen, an assistant superintendent with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
The construction company is actively recruiting women for field and labor jobs and management positions.
"We are trying to show the high school girls, who have an interest in building things or construction management, that there are people who look like them in the field that they can relate to," Hansen said.
