An $8 million "Wall of Wind" at the International Hurricane Research Center at Florida International University mimics the strength of hurricanes to determine what type of materials and building codes can stand up to storms. One test showed that a design using reinforced fiber and epoxy can secure trusses and beams better than metal hurricane clips.
