A new mapping tool from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Boston design firm can calculate rooftops' capacity for solar energy. The mapping tool has been used to show which of the 17,000 rooftops in Cambridge, Mass., are best suited for PVs by determining the amount of direct sunlight they receive. The tool also can compute the cost of rooftop solar installation and the amount of carbon emissions reduced by adding solar panels.
