Longview, Texas, may update codes to avoid higher homeowner insurance premiums

Company that rates city safety giving Longview second chance to improve status

Longview, Texas’s, building official said he hopes updating the city’s building code will help property owners maintain low insurance rates, after a recent audit would have bumped Longview down six notches on a nationally recognized insurance classification. Insurance Services Office, a national company that rates cities’ safety for insurance companies, reduced Longview’s classification from Class 3 to Class 9 for both residential and commercial/industrial properties. The organization gave Longview a chance to develop a program to regain the Class 3 status that will include, in part, adopting new codes.
