Solar installations seem to be contagious

Residents who install PV panels influence their neighbors to do so, too.

Studies have found that if a resident installs rooftop solar photovoltaic panels, it increases the odds that neighbors will install their own panels.

SolarCity, which has installed 230,000 rooftop systems nationwide, says that one-third of its customers were referred by a friend or neighbor. The company has produced animated maps illustrating the “contagion” effect.
