For Flood-prone Homes, Buyouts May Be Best Solution

More than 2,000 U.S. properties have experience 10 or more damaging floods

Owners of 2,109 properties across the U.S. have experienced damaging floods 10 times or more. More than 30,000 other properties have flooded multiple times. The National Flood Insurance Program has paid to rebuild them after each flood. One home in Batchelor, Louisiana flooded 40 times and received a total of $428,379 in flood insurance payments. A post by the National Resource Defense Council argues that it would make more sense for the government to buy out these homeowners rather than having the NFIP on the hook for future payouts.
