The popularity of tiny homes is on the rise, but it’s quite a challenge in most places to legally build them for full-time use. Most zoning laws and building codes require a minimum square footage for new homes, and efforts to reduce that size have been slow to take off. The national coordinator for the Tiny House Association says that only a handful of cities in the U.S. have directly addressed tiny homes in their regulations.
