More Robust Energy Codes Lead to Backlash in North Carolina

Newly adopted energy efficiency codes in North Carolina have led to a backlash. Legislation recently passed in North Carolina’s House of Representatives would require a rigorous cost-benefit analysis on energy code provisions retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018.

The bill requires the N.C. Building Code Council to create a new cost-benefit analytic methodology. The measure is fueled by the notion that stricter codes mean higher costs. This is not an accurate perception especially when utility savings is considered, according to Pam Fasse, president of Fasse Construction.
