Housing Industry Focuses On Designing For Seniors

By 2035, one in three households is projected to be headed by someone over 65. That equates to 79 million people.

Curbed reports that the housing industry is preparing for the future. Architects, designers, and researchers are discussing strategies on designing for old age and how to take care of a growing population of senior citizens.

The main challenge will be creating homes and buildings that encourage social connection and engagement.

“In this country, we create fancy nursing homes, ship people there, and everybody there is old,” says architect Matthias Hollwich. “It’s segregated. People have lost the connection to their community and have to reinvent their communities, which is hard in a place with so much turnover and new arrivals.”
