Foreign Interest in US Job Market Wavers

Industries that rely more heavily on foreign workers—including the construction industry—could soon begin to feel the impacts of tightening immigration policies
May 20, 2025

As immigration policies tighten, interest from foreign workers in U.S.-based jobs is declining. According to Construction Dive, which cites data from online networking platform Indeed, interest from foreign job seekers has fallen by 29% over the past year. This could have a significant impact on industries across the U.S., but some industries—including construction—tend to rely more heavily on workers from outside the U.S. Nearly 20% of U.S. workers were considered foreign-born as of March 2025, but immigrants comprise approximately 30% of the construction industry.

“The decline comes as immigration policies tighten globally and the U.S. labor market cools,” according to the report. “This drop could have real economic consequences, especially for sectors like healthcare and construction that depend heavily on immigrant labor. Fewer clicks today could mean fewer workers tomorrow, potentially deepening labor shortages in industries already under strain.”
