Construction Industry Adds More Jobs in April

Year-over-year, the construction sector added approximately 143,000 jobs, but the numbers vary by state

Despite ongoing economic challenges, the construction sector saw a slight uptick in jobs during April. According to data analyzed by the National Association of Home Builders, construction jobs in the U.S. increased by 143,000, or about 1.7%, year-over-year. On a month-over-month basis, 11,000 construction jobs were added.

This data varies across the U.S., with 24 states reporting an increase in construction jobs compared with the prior month, while an additional 24 states and Washington, D.C., saw a decline in construction jobs. Indiana and New York reported no change from March to April. During this time, California saw the most job growth, adding 6,300 jobs in the past month. Meanwhile, Washington lost 3,300 jobs.

When looking at the data on a year-over-year basis, however, Texas saw the most job growth:

Texas added 32,000 jobs, which was the largest gain of any state, while Washington lost 15,000 construction sector jobs. In percentage terms, New Mexico had the highest annual growth rate in the construction sector at 14.6%. Over this period, Washington reported the largest decline of 6.6%.
