Construction Lab Launched in Pittsburgh to Develop Labor and Building Innovation

The Last Mile Lab seeks to create an inclusive pathway for workforce development while introducing new building techniques and opportunities for industry innovation

For the last two years, the building industry has been bogged down by supply chain disruptions, inflated materials prices, and construction delays, but for over a decade, persisting issues like labor shortages and building inefficiency have created a more widespread set of challenges. In response, training programs and home building companies like Pittsburgh-based Module are offering a template for industry progress with workforce development opportunities and a test lab for innovative products and building practices.

The Last Mile Lab is working in partnership with the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh to give women and minorities direct access to workforce training and job shadowing. The seven-week program will welcome five individuals to the Institute’s carpentry program and will focus on modular construction as a way to create more affordable housing for the metro area.

"We are very excited to embark on this collaboration,” said Donta Green, the executive director of the Trade Institute of Pittsburgh. “Module brings a much-needed model of affordable and accessible housing to the Pittsburgh region. Through this partnership, Trade Institute students will be exposed to new opportunities in the Module field of sustainable and energy efficient construction."
