A Conversation with LiftMaster: Wi-Fi-Enabled Garage Door Openers

LiftMaster has taken convenience and security to the next level for homeowners with the introduction of the industry’s first Wi-Fi-enabled garage door openers. We recently sat down with the company’s experts to learn more about how this technology works and the benefits it offers to consumers. Here's what they had to say.

Question: How does a Wi-Fi-enabled opener work?

LiftMaster: Our Wi-Fi-enabled openers connect to a home router simply by downloading and accessing the MyQ® app on a smartphone or tablet. The app enables users to open, close, and monitor the status of their garage door from anywhere. Homeowners can choose to receive a push notification on their device whenever someone opens or closes the garage door so they can be alerted of any activity in real time.

We’ve also teamed up with the leading names in connected technology to allow consumers to customize how their MyQ-connected garage door openers and lights interact with their favorite smart devices and home automation platforms. Our growing list of home connectivity partnerships include Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Nest devices.

By integrating these technologies, homeowners can not only be notified when the door opens or closes, but they can also view who is entering or exiting the garage. And they’re able to link multiple devices together securely, enabling them to program and control everything from a single source as part of a complete home automation system.

Q: How secure are LiftMaster Wi-Fi-enabled garage door openers?

LiftMaster: Our closed, encrypted cloud-based system ensures maximum security for homeowners. Our technology meets the stringent security requirements of Google, Apple, and other partners.

To add an extra layer of security, we also offer an optional 841LM Automatic Garage Door Lock that makes it nearly impossible for intruders to gain entry to a garage. The system automatically locks and unlocks with every operation of the door. And because it provides a lock on each side of the door, the 841LM also defends against high winds and storms.

Q: Will LiftMaster openers work with all garage doors?

LiftMaster: Yes, we offer solutions for any size or weight of door by all manufacturers.

Q: Why do Wi-Fi-enabled openers matter to homeowners?

LiftMaster: Our solution makes it seamless for homeowners to download the app and have immediate access to receiving alerts and being able to open and close the garage door without having to purchase a third-party gateway or bridge device.

Q: What other innovative technology does LiftMaster offer?

LiftMaster: We also offer a residential community solution with gate and access systems to help keep the community or building safe while assisting with traffic management. Our gate entry system operators and access control systems work together to minimize delays at the gate while maximizing resident satisfaction.
