When it comes to designing and building homes, budgets are often tight, especially in today’s market where construction costs continue to rise. But tight budget constraints shouldn’t mean cutting corners.

In a recent blog post, Greenwood Village, Colo.-based architecture firm BSB Design outlines several ways housing industry professionals can design homes smarter to keep a project on budget without sacrificing quality or style.

For instance, designers and builders can cut back on unnecessary space by elimating hallways and instead focus on creating functional living spaces. Additionally, streamlining the shape and layout of a home can help save both time and money.

Corners, jogs and beams all add complexity—and cost. Simplifying the geometry of a home can have a major impact on framing and material budgets. By aligning walls and streamlining the structure, you make construction faster and more efficient. But simplicity doesn’t mean eliminating every architectural move.

Some corners and beams add real value. Maybe they define a space or create a visual focal point. The key is to keep the ones that add purpose or aesthetic punch and cut the rest.
