As homebuyers look to stay in their homes for longer periods of time, they are increasingly seeking functional spaces designed to help them achieve simpler, streamlined lives. For high-traffic areas like the kitchen, that kind of efficiency is especially important. According to home remodeling and design platform Houzz's 2026 U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, functionality is the top priority for homeowners when it comes to kitchen design in 2026.

With aging housing stock, a shortage of available homes and longer homeowner tenure, more homeowners are choosing to invest in improving the functionality of the kitchens they already have rather than move. That’s driving an emphasis on practical upgrades such as built-in storage and efficient layouts that help kitchens better support everyday living.

Keeping away clutter will be important for homeowners in 2026

Closed storage solutions are becoming increasingly popular as homeowners seek to reduce visible kitchen clutter. According to 76% of survey respondents, specialty built-in features are important to have in the kitchen. Pantry cabinets have become an especially popular upgrade, according to 47% of respondents. Additionally, 16% noted a desire for walk-in pantries, and 7% say they want a butler’s pantry.

Wanting to stay in their homes for longer, homeowners are opting for timeless kitchen designs

Practicality and timelessness are expected to drive design style choices throughout 2026. In general, homeowners are gravitating toward quality materials and designs rather than following the latest fads.

Still, some design styles are expected to remain popular throughout the year. Transitional remains the most popular design style, according to 25% of respondents, followed by traditional styles, cited by 12% of survey respondents.

Aging-in-place accommodations will also remain popular throughout 2026

For homeowners who are making upgrades to their kitchens, 31% say they’re renovating with aging relatives in mind, and 41% say they’re planning for their own aging needs. Additionally, 90% of homeowners are prioritizing accessibility features, including additional lighting, wider drawer pulls, rounded countertops, and non-slip flooring.
