In 2026, comfort, longevity, and overall well-being are taking center stage when it comes to home design, according to a recent report from home remodeling and design platform Houzz. From neutral color palettes to wellness-driven spaces, the emerging trends defined in the report point to a desire for timeless spaces that support everyday living rather than passing fads.

Homeowners are choosing features based on longevity

More homeowners are preparing to stay in their homes long-term as shown by the uptick in those who are upgrading their homes with aging-in-place features. According to Houzz, 66% of homeowners say they consider special needs during bathroom remodels, with curbless showers and grab bars being the most common upgrades.

However, accessibility goes beyond the bathroom, with an increase in homeowners who say they're interested in single-story floor plans, wider pathways, and easy-access kitchen storage, among other features that make a home livable to those of all ages and abilities.

Floor plans that accommodate multigenerational living will also continue to gain traction in 2026, according to the report. Accessory dwelling units, shared outdoor areas, and clearly separated private and communal spaces are helping families cohabitate in the same home for longer periods of time.

Functionality remains a top priority for homeowners in 2026

Homeowners are looking for features that feel high-end and intentional while simultaneously improving how spaces work. As open and flexible layouts remain popular, design is becoming smarter, with panel-ready appliances, hidden range hoods, pocket-door cabinetry, integrated and smart lighting, and lift-up storage systems helping make spaces more functional.

Neutral, warm color palettes will continue to be popular

Warm, mid-tone woods are returning in a big way in 2026, according to Houzz. Rift- and quartersawn white oak, walnut, elm, hickory, cherry and cerused finishes are replacing the pale oak that has long dominated interior spaces.

These wood tones are being enhanced by the earthy and muted hues that have grown in popularity over the past few years. Terra cotta, sage, olive, creamy beiges, browns, taupes and warm yellows will be the new go-tos for homeowners in 2026.

Wellness is here to stay

In 2026, homeowners are seeking more than calm-looking spaces. They want features that actively support relaxation and health. Wellness-focused design is expanding beyond the bathroom to influence the entire home, including the outdoor spaces. Saunas, steam showers, hydrotherapy tubs, plunge pools, and home gyms are all becoming increasingly common.
