Hot Climate-Affordable Home:

Amhome USA

This 2534 square foot home combines the strength of concrete with the insulating capabilities of foam to create R-37 walls. Nine inches of EPS foam between the I-joist roof rafters provide R-50 roof insulation.Exterior doors are rated R-15 and special solar shading screens on windows further reduce unwanted solar heating.

 


Hot Climate-Custom Home:

Dewees Builders, Inc.

A two-speed,two-zone geothermal heat pump with desuperheater provides energy-efficient heating, cooling and water heating in this 2721 square foot home on Dewees Island, S.C. A makeup air damper introduces fresh air into the home.

 


Hot Climate-Innovative Home:

Enviro Solar Homes, a division of BBH Enterprises

This winning entry features an energy-efficient building shell consisting of low-E, argon-filled wood windows, structural insulated panel walls and vaulted rood, and Icynene spray foam insulation in flat ceilings and around the band joist (to seal and insulate this notoriously hard-to-weatherize area).

 


Hot Climate-Production Home:

Newmark Homes

This production home features high levels of wall and attic insulation as well as TechShield radiant barrier roof decking to lower attic temperatures and reduce the air conditioning load. A programmable thermostat further reduces energy use.

 


Moderate Climate-Innovative Home:

Casa Verde Custom Homes

This award-winning home features walls built from concrete post and beam and insulated with straw bales. Perimeter and subslab foam insulation and R-30 to R-60 ceilings complete the insulation package. Ductwork for the evaporative cooling system is sealed with mastic and contained within conditioned space to minimize energy losses.

 


Cold Climate-Custom Home:

Holdridge Homes

This Perrysburg, Ohio-based builder performs an energy analysis to weight the cost and benefits of efficiency measures. Daily inspections during construction ensure that energy efficiency details are implemented correctly. Holdridge Homes also gives each buyer a comprehensive manual and demonstrates home operation and maintenance during orientation.

 


Cold Climate-Custom Home:

Colorado Dream Homes, LLC

This custom home features unique, double, 2x4 inch wall construction that easily accommodates R-38 fiber glass batt insulation in the 12-inch wall cavity, resulting in deep window wells that customers enjoy.

 


Cold Climate-Production Home:

Wayne Homes, LLC

This entry is one of more than 800 homes that the company has built to the same energy-efficiency specifications. The homes feature low-E, argon-filled vinyl windows, R-8 below-grade insulation, R-18 above-grade walls and R-40 attic insulation.
