With a median selling price of $104 per square foot, homes sell at a 6 percent discount in February compared to the rest of the year.
The New York Times says that this month is the most affordable time of the year for a house. The bad weather makes buyers pause their searches, while people with families don’t want to move in the middle of a school year.
Not surprisingly, the other most affordable months are January, March, and April, per data from Attom, a real estate analytics service. Buyers pay more for homes in summer months.
Sellers who list their homes during the slower months are typically eager to sell, said William E. Brown, president of the National Association of Realtors. “It’s a buyer’s market during the colder winter months,” Mr. Brown said. “When sellers list in the winter, they know it’s slower, so they’re more motivated and more willing to negotiate.”
