Phoenix-based Cavco Industries and LivingHomes of Santa Monica, Calif., recently debuted their C6 model, a LEED Platinum modular unit designed in the mid-century modern architectural style that was made famous in the desert in the ’50s and ’60s.
Unlike typical rectangular modular units, the C6 is built in the shape of a C around a courtyard, which makes the home accessible through a variety of openings to sup port an active indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
“We’re trying to shatter the image of modular housing,” said Paul Deroo, VP of sales and marketing for Cavco Industries. The 1,200-square-foot unit comes with a number of green features, including cork flooring; natural wood millwork; wood siding; energyefficient lighting and appliances; photovoltaic panels that provide all of the home’s power needs; no-VOC paints; low-flow fixtures; and numerous windows to maximize daylighting, such as floor-to-ceiling glass, clere-story windows, light tubes, and transom windows.
The C6 is available in most markets across the country for about $185,000. Cavco is handling the production of the units and LivingHomes is providing installation and setup.
