NPR reports that as of 2012, renters made up 35 percent of American households, a number that is increasing and reversing a decades-long uptick in homeownership. In the past 50 years, the percentage of income renters are spending has increased dramatically, and a quarter of renters are spending more than half their income on rent. But this doesn’t mean all of them are living in trendier areas – it’s a matter of supply and demand.
