Why Americans are staying put

Data from the U.S. census reveal that mobility among Americans is slowing substantially.


The share of Americans who move each year fell from more than 20 percent during the 1950s and 1960s to just 11.7 percent last year, The Atlantic’s CityLab reports. This number is the lowest level since such statistics have been collected. Economists speculate about the cause of this decline, and their reasons include decreasing housing affordability in some places or people being locked in place with homes they cannot sell.
