What was it like living in a single-family house in Lincoln, Neb., back in the 1940s? The Wall Street Journal profiles talk-show host and author Dick Cavett, who gives us the inside scoop.

Cavett, the son of two English teachers, remembers growing up on a street lined with elm trees. Early in his life, his family moved from a small town to Lincoln, which Cavett describes as “the biggest city I had ever seen,” where teachers of visiting high school students on a field trip from nearby towns “couldn’t get the kids off the escalators at the local department store.”
