Portuguese Retirement Home Turns Red in Case of Emergency

Dezeen profiles the Alcabideche Social Complex, near Lisbon, a retirement complex which was designed using a traditional Mediterranean layout reimagined with modern cube homes.

"The Social Complex of Alcabideche aims to reconstitute a Mediterranean lifestyle in which the outdoor spaces of streets, plazas, and gardens are like an extension of the house itself," the architects said in a statement. The cube homes are connected by maze-like pathways similar to the medina streets of North African cities. At night, the roofs of the homes illuminate with white light. When a resident needs help, an emergency alarm will make the roofs shine with red light.
