The Invisible Housing Crisis of Rural America

Around 21 percent of Americans live in rural areas – that’s well over 62,000,000 people. But when it comes to discussions of the housing market, their problems go unmentioned.

Gillian B. White of The Atlantic documents the plight many rural Americans face when it comes to housing conditions. “In rural America, it’s both prices and the terrible condition of existing homes that are problematic,” White writes.

Nearly 14 out of every 10,000 people are homeless in rural America, but aren’t as visible, because instead of sleeping on the streets, they are living in substandard shelter or in their cars.
