Los Angeles Is the Least Sprawling Metro, According to New Index

The traffic and pollution of Los Angeles are signifiers that many often identify with sprawl. But a new index shows Los Angeles ranking as the least sprawling metro.

The index, developed by New York University doctoral student Thomas Laidley, looks at aerial images to estimate sprawl at the Census block level, CityLab reports. Within these blocks, he looks at the number of people per square mile in three thresholds: 3,500, 8,500, and 20,000.
